Vodafone Idea Crashes 12% as Supreme Court Dismisses ₹30,000 Cr AGR Relief Plea

IDEA
shares tanked 12% after the Supreme Court rejected its plea for relief on ₹30,000 crore in Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) dues which is mainly comprising penalties and interest on penalties. AGR refers to the revenue used to calculate telecom license fees and spectrum charges, including both telecom and non-telecom earnings. The court termed the petition “shocking” and baseless, intensifying the pressure on the debt-laden telco. The government currently holds a 49% stake in Vodafone Idea, following an equity conversion of prior dues. This decision also dragged Indus Towers down by 4.6%. In a related move, Bharti Airtel sought similar relief, arguing for equal treatment across all license holders. With 59.06 lakh retail shareholders (each holding up to ₹2 lakh in capital), Vodafone Idea’s ongoing financial struggles raise serious concerns for the broader telecom sector and investor confidence.
