gets fast track for ALS drug

gained momentum as the USFDA granted fast track designation for its novel oral drug Usnoflast, developed to treat Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) which is a rare, fatal neurodegenerative disease affecting around 32,000 people in the US, with 5,000 new diagnoses annually. Notably, Usnoflast had earlier secured Orphan Drug Designation, which brings benefits like tax credits for clinical trials, fee waivers, and a potential 7-year marketing exclusivity on approval. ALS typically leads to severe neuroinflammation and degeneration, with an average survival of just 2–5 years post-diagnosis, often due to respiratory failure. Zydus has already completed a Phase 2(a) trial on 24 ALS patients across seven Indian sites and is now cleared to initiate a Phase 2(b) trial in the US. The drug has shown promise across models of Parkinson’s, MS, and IBD as well. With around 75,000 ALS patients in India and over 30,000 in Europe, this fast track status signals urgency and potential in addressing a high unmet need in neurological healthcare.
