Government Initiative: The BharatNet project is a flagship government program designed to deliver high-speed broadband connectivity to all inhabited Gram Panchayats and rural villages, aiming to bridge the digital divide. Deal Awarded to Polycab India: BSNL has awarded a major contract to Polycab India. The deal is a part of the broader BharatNet programme and centers on developing and managing the middle-mile network infrastructure. Contract Value and Financial Breakdown: Total Value: Approximately ₹6,448 crore. Capital Expenditure (Capex): Roughly ₹3,742 crore. Operational Expenditure (Opex): For the newly built network: About ₹2,245 crore. For the existing network: Around ₹460.5 crore. Scope of Work: The contract covers the entire lifecycle for the middle-mile network, encompassing: Design and supply of infrastructure, Construction and installation, Upgradation, Operation and maintenance. Implementation Timeline & Maintenance: Construction Phase: Target completion within three years. Maintenance Period: A 10-year contract that follows, with maintenance charges structured at 5.5% of the capex per annum for the first five years and 6.5% for the next five years. Funding and Strategic Importance: The project is funded by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and is pivotal for enhancing rural connectivity.
