IT Stocks Are Rebounding. Is This the Start of a Recovery?
Indian IT stocks attracted buying interest on October 13 after
HCLTECH
delivered stronger-than-expected quarterly results.
The market signals:
- HCLTech reported 21.2% year-on-year net profit growth.
- HCLTech and TCS were among the stocks supporting the sector's recovery in early trade.
- The Nifty IT index gained, although the sector remained substantially lower for the year amid concerns over technology spending and AI-driven disruption.
Three things investors should separate
1. Earnings momentum
Improving margins and stronger deal wins can support profitability, but investors should check whether growth is broad-based across the sector.
2. Artificial intelligence
AI can create new service opportunities while putting pressure on traditional billing models. The net impact will depend on execution and customer demand.
3. Valuation versus business quality
A falling share price may create an opportunity, but valuation should be assessed against future earnings, cash flow and growth visibility.
My view
The latest results are encouraging for sentiment, but one strong session does not confirm a sector-wide trend reversal. I would look for follow-through buying, consistent earnings delivery and improving management guidance before becoming more constructive.
The key question is not whether IT stocks have fallen enough. It is whether their future earnings outlook is improving.
