Yes Bank: profit jumps 65%, but the test is growth quality
Yes Bank Ltd reported a 65.1% YoY increase in Q2 FY27 net profit to ₹1,080 crore.
Net interest income also grew 22.7% YoY to ₹2,822 crore, giving the quarter a strong start.
The headline numbers are encouraging, but for a bank that has been working on rebuilding its franchise, the quality of growth matters more than one quarter's profit jump.
The bank's operating performance needs to be assessed alongside credit costs, slippages, net interest margin and deposit growth.
A stronger NII number suggests that the core lending business is gaining momentum. The important question now is whether Yes Bank can sustain this growth while maintaining disciplined underwriting.
Asset quality will remain a key part of the story. Investors should watch gross NPA, net NPA and credit costs over the next few quarters rather than relying only on the reported profit.
Deposit mobilisation is another important factor. Sustainable loan growth requires a stable funding base, particularly as competition for deposits remains high across the banking sector.
For me, the key numbers to track from here are:
1. NII growth and NIM trajectory.
2. Deposit growth versus advances growth.
3. Slippages and credit costs.
4. Gross and net NPA trends.
5. Return on assets and return on equity.
The broader private-bank segment is facing pressure today, so Yes Bank's price reaction to these results will also be important. A strong earnings number needs confirmation through sustained price and volume action.
view: The Q2 numbers are positive, particularly the 65% profit growth and 22.7% NII growth. But the bigger investment question is whether Yes Bank can convert this improvement into consistent earnings and return ratios over the next few quarters.
