Pharma Steps Up as Banking Heavyweights Drag the Index
Today's session ended on a mixed note, with the Nifty 50 closing at 23,270.60 (up 53 points, +0.23%), while the Sensex slipped marginally to 74,314.60 (down 21.85 points). It was a session of two halves, a strong first-half rally on the back of pharma buying, followed by afternoon profit-booking that pared most of the gains, especially in banking heavyweights.
HDFC Bank was the single biggest drag on the market, shaving nearly 28 points off the Nifty, with ICICI Bank close behind, cutting another 17+ points. This pulled Bank Nifty down 0.42% for the day, even as the broader index stayed positive, a clear sign banks bore the brunt of the Fed rate-hike fallout.
Pharma was the star performer, with the Nifty Pharma index jumping 1.66% and snapping a five-session losing streak, 18 of its 20 constituents closed higher, a genuinely broad-based move rather than one or two names carrying the sector.
Eternal,
