HAL Moves Deeper Into India’s Aero-Engine Ambition

Hindustan Aeronautics

HAL
is taking another step beyond aircraft manufacturing as it moves into the development of a new generation of indigenous helicopter engines. HAL and Safran Helicopter Engines have signed the final contract through their 50:50 joint venture, SAFHAL, to jointly design, develop, manufacture and support the new 3,500–4,000 shp “Aravalli” engine. The engine is intended to power India’s upcoming 13-tonne Indian Multi-Role Helicopter and its naval variant. The more interesting part is what this means for HAL’s position in the aerospace value chain. Engines have historically been one of the areas where India has remained dependent on foreign technology. Developing the Aravalli locally could therefore give HAL exposure to a much more strategic part of the helicopter ecosystem, including manufacturing, lifecycle support and future MRO opportunities. The stock is therefore interesting not simply because HAL has signed another defence agreement, but because propulsion is one of the most difficult parts of aerospace manufacturing to localise. If the programme progresses successfully, HAL could move a step closer to becoming a more vertically integrated aerospace player.
