ONGC: Gas Discovery in Mahanadi Deepwater

has struck gas at a deepwater well in the Mahanadi Offshore Basin, off the Odisha coast. ONGC made the discovery on September 18, 2026, at the MN-DW18-1-H-D well under the Samudra Manthan initiative. The well reached a target depth of 1,623 metres and encountered gas between 1,441 metres and 1,452 metres. The well is located around 43 km off Konark and has been flowing gas with encouraging reservoir pressure. The location is important because its proximity to the coast could make eventual development and monetisation easier than a discovery located much farther offshore. However, the discovery is still at the appraisal stage. The size and commercial viability of the resource need to be established before its earnings contribution can be assessed. My view is that the headline discovery is only the first step. The more important numbers will come from appraisal drilling, recoverable reserves and eventual production plans. Until those are known, I would treat this as an exploration development rather than an immediate earnings driver. I will watch whether ONGC can establish commercial reserves and move the discovery towards a development plan.
