India’s Fiscal Deficit Reaches 26.8% of FY27 Target

India’s fiscal deficit stood at ₹4.55 lakh crore during April–July 2026, reaching 26.8% of the FY27 budget target of ₹16.96 lakh crore. The government has targeted a fiscal deficit of 4.3% of GDP for FY27. The latest data from the Controller General of Accounts (CGA) is broadly encouraging because the deficit accumulation is lower than last year. During April–July FY26, the fiscal deficit had reached 29.9% of the full-year target. A major positive is the improvement in tax collections. The Centre’s net tax revenue stood at around ₹8.45 lakh crore, equivalent to 29.5% of the FY27 Budget Estimate, compared with 23.3% during the same period last year. Stronger tax collections indicate better revenue generation and provide more room for government spending. However, government expenditure has increased. Total expenditure during the first four months of FY27 was around ₹17.62 lakh crore, or 32.9% of the annual Budget Estimate, compared with 30.9% a year earlier. The Centre transferred ₹3.72 lakh crore to states as their share of taxes, which was ₹56,190 crore lower than the previous year. Impact on Stock Market The data is mildly positive for the Indian stock market. Better tax collections and relatively controlled fiscal deficit can improve investor confidence and support fiscal stability. Banks and financial stocks could benefit if fiscal discipline helps keep borrowing costs and bond yields under control. Infrastructure and capital-goods companies may benefit from continued government spending and capital expenditure. PSU stocks could also see improved sentiment. The key risk is that government spending is running faster than last year. Investors will therefore watch upcoming months for signs of rising expenditure or borrowing. Overall: The fiscal numbers are currently positive for market sentiment, as revenue growth is strong and the government remains broadly on track toward its 4.3% FY27 fiscal-deficit target.
