India Strengthens Critical Supply Chains, Focuses on Energy, Fertilisers, Electronics and Critical Minerals

The Indian Government is taking steps to make the country’s supply chains stronger and less dependent on other countries. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said that key sectors such as energy, fertilisers, electronics, semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, medical devices and critical minerals are being prioritised. India is improving its energy security by increasing domestic production, diversifying imports and expanding refining capacity. The government is also promoting ethanol blending, biofuels, renewable energy and strategic petroleum reserves. Domestic fertiliser production met nearly 73% of India’s total requirement in 2025, helping reduce import dependence. The government is also focusing on critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, graphite, rare earth elements and copper. These minerals are essential for electric vehicles, batteries, electronics, semiconductors and clean-energy technologies. Through the National Critical Mineral Mission, India aims to secure mineral supplies from both domestic and overseas sources and develop the complete value chain—from mining and processing to recycling and manufacturing. Overall, the move aims to reduce import dependence, strengthen domestic manufacturing and protect India from global supply disruptions.
