India Targets $200bn Data Centre Investments News
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has positioned India as a major global destination for data centre investments, highlighting opportunities for Japanese companies to participate in the sector. He said India has already received investment commitments of around $200 billion from global hyperscalers. Between October and December 2025, Google announced $15 billion, Microsoft $17.5 billion, Amazon $35 billion and Digital Connexion $11 billion for AI infrastructure, including data centres, in India. The government has also proposed a tax holiday for the data centre sector until 2047 to attract further investments. During his meeting with Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Akazawa Ryosei, Goyal outlined four key areas of India-Japan cooperation: higher trade, stronger technology collaboration, increased investment and tourism promotion. Goyal also highlighted employment opportunities for Indians in Japan, including demand for caregivers, nurses, plumbers, electricians, skilled workers and drivers, along with highly skilled professionals such as AI specialists, engineers, PhDs and chartered accountants. Stock Market Impact Positive for Indian markets, particularly data centre, power, digital infrastructure, telecom, construction and electrical equipment companies. Rising AI and data-centre investments could boost long-term demand for power, cooling systems, networking equipment, real estate and infrastructure services. Companies exposed to data-centre construction and digital infrastructure may see increased investor interest.
