Cultivating Sustainability: How PM-PRANAM and Natural Farming Initiatives Are Transforming Indian Agriculture

To boost sustainable agriculture, the Indian government is driving initiatives like PM-PRANAM to encourage balanced fertilizer usage and reduce reliance on conventional chemicals like urea, DAP, NPK, and MOP. Approved in June 2023, the scheme incentivizes States and Union Territories by passing along 50% of fertilizer subsidy savings achieved through decreased chemical consumption. By championing organic inputs, alternative fertilizers, and resource-conserving practices, the initiative aims to systematically improve soil health while reducing the nation's overall chemical subsidy burden. Complementing this push are targeted programs including the Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY), the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region (MOVCDNER), and the National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF). Backed by substantial government funding and Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) precision nutrient technologies, these programs have already brought millions of farmers and hectares under organic and natural cultivation. Together, these measures form a cohesive strategy to lower chemical dependency, enhance farm yields, and accelerate India's transition toward environmentally sustainable farming.
