In the past decade, India has installed a total of 2,361 MW of biomass power projects and 228 MWe of waste-to-energy projects within the bioenergy sector. Furthermore, a total of 2.88 lakh biogas plants have been set up across the nation to promote the use of sustainable energy alternatives. The advancements in this field have been aided by the ongoing support for the National Bioenergy Programme (NBP), Phase I, which was announced with a budget of Rs. 998 Crore (approximately US$120 million) for the duration from 2022-2023 to 2025-2026. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has aided the expansion of the bioenergy sector by providing Central Financial Assistance to projects through various schemes aimed at developing biomass power, bio-CNG, biogas, and waste-to-energy initiatives. The strategic actions taken by the government involve offering financial aid incentives for generating energy from biogas and agro-industrial waste, advocating the development of bio-CNG facilities, and providing subsidies for setting up biomass cogeneration plants. These efforts have led to a rapid increase in renewable energy installations in states such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Punjab, which have emerged as leaders in the sector's growth.
