India Aims to Deploy Five Small Modular Nuclear Reactors by 2033

India is ramping up its nuclear energy footprint by planning to deploy five indigenous Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) by 2033. To accelerate this transition, the enactment of the SHANTI Act, 2025 has officially opened the nuclear energy domain to private sector investment and technological collaboration. Key developments led by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) include a 220 MW Bharat Small Modular Reactor, a 55 MW SMR, and a High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor specifically designed for clean hydrogen production, cementing the nation's indigenous capabilities in low-carbon energy technology. This initiative is a critical pillar of India's broader Nuclear Energy Mission, which targets an ambitious 100 GW of capacity by 2047. In the medium term, installed capacity is set to scale up from 8.78 GW to approximately 22 GW by 2031-32 as under-construction projects come online.
