India Hosts 61st Global CIML Meeting in New Delhi

India is hosting the 61st Meeting of the International Committee of Legal Metrology (CIML) in New Delhi from October 26 to 28, 2026, marking the first time the country has hosted a conference for the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML). The event convenes global delegates, technical experts, and senior officials to foster international cooperation in measurement standardization and equitable trade practices. Key discussions led by CIML leadership—including President Dr. Bob Joseph Matthew and First Vice-President Ms. Renée Hansson—highlighted legal metrology's crucial role in digital transformation and emerging technologies. Additionally, Director of the International Bureau of Legal Metrology (BIML) Mr. Anthony Donellan detailed ongoing efforts to streamline technical recommendations and advance mutual acceptance of test results via the OIML Certification System (OIML-CS). In her address, Secretary of the Department of Consumer Affairs Ms. Nidhi Khare emphasized that internationally harmonized, accurate measurements are foundational to economic growth, market transparency, and consumer protection. Underscoring India’s regulatory evolution under the Jan Vishwas reforms of 2023 and 2026, she outlined key measures—such as decriminalizing select technical offenses, instituting improvement notices, and enforcing graded penalties—that balance consumer rights with ease of doing business. India's metrological infrastructure has been further strengthened by its status as an OIML-CS Issuing Authority, the expansion of Government Approved Test Centres (GATCs), and the deployment of the e-Maap National Portal. Additionally, the “One Nation, One Time” National Time Dissemination Project is establishing traceable Indian Standard Time to synchronize critical digital infrastructure across telecommunications, banking, and national power grids.
