India Aviation Passenger & ATC Infrastructure Update
According to Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu, India's aviation sector achieved a key milestone by recording over 1.5 crore domestic air passengers in a single month. In a message shared on October 20, 2026, marking the International Day of the Air Traffic Controller, the Minister extended greetings to controllers gathered in Chennai while highlighting the sector's rapid growth. Indian airspace currently manages over 5,000 domestic and 1,000 international flight movements daily. Emphasizing the nation's long-term vision under Viksit Bharat, Minister Naidu outlined an ambitious target to scale annual passenger traffic from 24 crore to 130 crore by 2047. Addressing technological integration in aviation, the Minister stressed that while advanced technology supports operations, human judgment, composure, and responsibility remain irreplaceable for ensuring flight safety. To modernise air navigation and airport systems, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has earmarked ₹3,490 crore ($368.50 million) for infrastructure upgrades. This capital allocation includes ₹1,532 crore ($161.76 million) specifically dedicated to automating the national air traffic management system. As air traffic volumes expand, modernizing ATC infrastructure will be crucial to maintaining safe, efficient airspace management and building a resilient, tech-enabled aviation ecosystem.
