Crude at $112 puts Indian equities under pressure

Brent crude climbed to approximately $112 per barrel on 22 October 2026 as Middle East tensions intensified. The Nifty 50 fell 0.54% to 22,687.65, extending its losing streak to three sessions. What happened? The Sensex declined 0.62% to 73,249.39, while the Nifty Midcap and Smallcap indices fell 0.9% and 1.1%, respectively. Thirteen of the 16 major sectoral indices ended lower. IT, energy and FMCG stocks were among the weakest performers. For India, a sustained increase in crude prices presents a macroeconomic challenge because the country imports a substantial share of its oil requirements. Higher crude prices can increase the import bill, add pressure to inflation and weaken corporate margins across fuel-intensive industries. My analysis The key risk is not simply that oil prices are rising. It is that the market may need to reassess earnings expectations if elevated crude prices persist. The impact will vary across sectors.
