Mahindra Finance’s 55% profit growth faces a test

Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services Limited (NSE: M&MFIN) reported Q2 FY27 standalone profit after tax of ₹882 crore, up 55% year-on-year. Its shares fell as much as 10% intraday on 22 October despite the strong headline earnings growth. What happened? The lender reported: - Net interest income of ₹2,822 crore, up 17% year-on-year. - Disbursements of ₹16,499 crore, up 22%. - Assets under management of ₹1.47 lakh crore, up 15%. - Credit costs of 1.6%, compared with 2.2% a year earlier. - Net interest margin of approximately 7%. Consolidated profit after tax rose 61% to ₹911 crore. Despite these improvements, investors focused on concerns around funding costs, tractor-loan asset quality and potential regulatory changes affecting insurance distribution income. My analysis The disconnect between earnings growth and the share-price reaction is worth examining. Lower credit costs have contributed to the profit improvement. This is positive, but credit costs are cyclical and can reverse if borrower repayment capacity weakens. Funding costs are another important variable. If borrowing becomes more expensive faster than the lender can reprice its loans, margins may come under pressure even as its loan book expands.
