Reliance’s record O2C earnings come with a margin caveat

Reliance Industries Limited (NSE: RELIANCE) reported Q2 FY27 consolidated revenue of ₹3.62 lakh crore, up 27.8% year-on-year. Profit after tax, including associates and joint ventures, increased 33.8% to ₹29,550 crore. What happened? The strongest contributor was the oil-to-chemicals (O2C) business. O2C revenue increased 44.2% to approximately ₹2.31 lakh crore. O2C EBITDA surged 67.9% to ₹25,203 crore. Consolidated EBITDA rose 23.9% to ₹62,409 crore. Digital Services EBITDA increased 17.7% to ₹22,223 crore. The O2C business benefited from stronger transportation-fuel cracks and improved downstream chemical margins. Average Brent crude prices were also significantly higher during the quarter. My analysis The record O2C performance is impressive, but investors should distinguish between structural improvement and commodity-cycle tailwinds. Higher fuel cracks and product prices can generate exceptional refining profitability. However, these conditions are cyclical and can reverse quickly as global supply-demand balances change. There is another important detail: consolidated EBITDA margin declined to 17.2% from 17.8% a year earlier, despite the increase in EBITDA. This suggests that revenue growth was faster than operating-profit growth. Reliance's digital business provides a different earnings engine, with relatively consistent growth. The longer-term investment case depends on balancing the cyclical O2C business with the growth and cash-generation potential of digital services and retail.
