Sun Pharma’s profit falls 36%, but headline needs context
Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Limited (NSE: SUNPHARMA) reported Q2 FY27 revenue of ₹16,199 crore, up 11.9% year-on-year. Reported net profit declined 36% to ₹1,989 crore. What happened? The sharp decline in reported profit was largely driven by exceptional charges of ₹1,268.8 crore. These included: ₹922.7 crore towards settlement of a US antitrust litigation case. ₹346.2 crore in expenses related to the proposed acquisition of Organon. Operationally, the picture was more resilient: EBITDA increased 4.8% to ₹4,744 crore. EBITDA margin stood at 29.3%. India formulation sales grew 17.3% to ₹5,552 crore. US sales declined 8.2%, while specialty-drug sales increased 6.9% to $356 million. The Organon acquisition remains on track for closure in Q4 FY27. My analysis The 36% decline in reported profit looks alarming, but it does not accurately represent the entire operating performance of the quarter. The exceptional charges need to be separated from recurring business profitability. At the same time, investors should not dismiss them entirely: litigation settlements and acquisition expenses have real cash and capital-allocation implications.
