Coal India's October output hits a record high

Coal India Limited (NSE: COALINDIA) produced a record 67.2 million tonnes of coal in October 2026, up 19% year on year. Total coal supplies also reached a monthly record of 70.3 MT, including an all-time high of 57.1 MT supplied to the power sector. What happened October marked a strong operational month for India's largest coal producer. Production and total supplies both grew 19% year on year. Daily railway rake loading for the power sector also reached a record 310 rakes. Why it matters Higher dispatches indicate strong demand and improved coal evacuation. However, the production trend over the first half of FY27 was weaker than the October headline suggests. H1 production stood at 321 MT, down from 329.14 MT a year earlier, while offtake rose 7.6% to 384.20 MT. Pithead inventory declined to 66.58 MT at September-end from 130.28 MT at the beginning of the financial year. Coal India's FY27 production target is 815 MT. After accounting for H1 production and October's 67.2 MT, the company needs to produce roughly 85.4 MT per month over the remaining five months to meet that target. That is a meaningful acceleration from October's output. What to watch next Track monthly production through the winter months, inventory replenishment and railway evacuation. Also watch e-auction realisations and the mix of coal supplied, since higher volumes do not automatically translate into proportionate profit growth. Stance: Operationally encouraging, but the full-year production target is not yet de-risked. Sustained production growth, rather than dispatch records alone, will determine whether the improvement is durable.
