FPIs return with ₹14,796 crore of buying in one session

Foreign investors bought a net ₹14,796 crore of Indian equities on 5 November 2026, their largest daily purchase since February 2021. The Nifty 50 gained 2.4% to close at 24,536.60, extending its six-session rally to more than 8%. What happened The sharp buying reversal came alongside a recovery in global risk appetite and a decline in crude oil prices. Foreign investors had sold approximately US$30 billion of Indian equities through October, making the latest inflows a significant change in near-term positioning. Why it matters India had underperformed several emerging markets partly because elevated crude prices raised concerns about inflation, the current account and corporate margins. Lower oil prices can ease some of that pressure, particularly for sectors such as aviation, paints and other oil-sensitive businesses. The return of foreign buying also matters because it can support large-cap liquidity and improve market breadth. However, one strong session does not establish a durable reversal. The latest move also coincided with global portfolio rebalancing away from AI-linked stocks, so some of the buying may be tactical rather than a long-term allocation decision. What to watch next The immediate test is whether the Nifty can sustain levels above the 24,500 psychological mark through Friday, 6 November, and the following sessions. Track whether foreign buying continues beyond the latest session, whether domestic institutional flows remain supportive, and whether crude prices stay lower. A reversal in oil prices or a return of foreign selling would weaken the sustainability of the rally, especially after an advance of more than 8% in six sessions. Stance: Cautiously positive. The combination of lower crude prices and renewed foreign buying is supportive, but the rally needs confirmation through sustained flows and broader earnings participation. Avoid treating one exceptional FPI session as a confirmed trend reversal.
