Maruti Suzuki's revenue rises 26%, but profit falls 26%

Maruti Suzuki India Limited (NSE: MARUTI) reported Q2 FY27 consolidated revenue of ₹53,356 crore, up approximately 26% year-on-year. Net profit declined 26.4% to ₹2,466 crore despite record quarterly sales of 6.97 lakh vehicles. What happened? The automaker delivered strong sales growth during the September quarter, supported by domestic demand across small cars and SUVs. However, profitability came under pressure: Consolidated net profit declined 26.4% year-on-year. Revenue from operations increased approximately 26%. Higher material and labour costs pushed expenses up faster than revenue. Standalone EBITDA margin contracted to approximately 8.9%, from around 12% a year earlier. The company has indicated that further price increases, cost controls and spending discipline may be needed to protect profitability. My analysis This is a useful reminder that strong demand and strong earnings are not the same thing. Maruti's record sales demonstrate that its product portfolio continues to attract customers. Yet the sharp decline in profit shows that incremental revenue is not translating into incremental earnings. The key issue is the relationship between selling prices and input costs. If commodity costs rise faster than vehicle prices, higher volumes can actually put pressure on margins
