There has been a lot of chatter around the decorative paints market in India ever since
GRASIM
announced its foray with a massive 10,000Cr CapEx in the space - setting up the 2nd largest capacity in the oligopolistic paints market with erstwhile 5 key players.
ASIANPAINT
shareholders have had a tumultuous experience ever since 2023 as the leader's share plummeted ~30% and have not recovered meaningfully ever since. The fact of the matter is that Birla Opus is burning ~300cr to 400cr annually to gain the 3-4% market share it currently has garnered. Asian Paints remains the market leader with ~53% market share, highest EBITDA margins in the space and moats that are difficult to challenge - top talent, top data and top distribution : a trifecta that's lethal. Seems like the bad days are behind Asian Paints since a lower FY25 base effect kicks in as we step into the first results season of FY26.
Learning Outcome: Understanding market disruption, competitive intensity, and resilience of incumbents like Asian Paints amid aggressive new entrants especially in oligopolistic sectors becomes super important while investing.
