VEDL
Q1 FY26 Overview

They hit record production numbers across the board - alumina up 36%, ferro-chrome surged 150%, and zinc volumes jumping 50%. Revenue grew 14% to ₹39,789 crores while EBITDA margins hit a solid 35%. Even better, they're actually paying down debt with net debt-to-EBITDA falling to 1.2x. But here's the reality check: Hindustan Zinc, their best business, saw profits drop 4.7% despite all this operational excellence. Why? Zinc and lead prices are getting hammered globally, and no amount of efficiency can overcome commodity cycles when they turn against you. The bigger question is whether

can maintain these margins when prices get tougher. They're clearly world-class operators - hitting production records while others struggle is no accident. But metals is ultimately a price-taking business, and global demand for zinc and aluminum is looking shaky. What I like is the debt reduction and operational discipline. They're using good times to strengthen the balance sheet rather than getting carried away with expansion. That's smart cyclical management. But whether this quarter represents sustainable earnings power or just a cyclical peak depends entirely on commodity price trends they can't control. The operations are impressive, the financials are solid, but the cycle will have the final say on whether this momentum continues.
