Ather Pulls Ahead as Ola Electric Loses Ground

The comparison between

ATHERENERG
and Ola Electric is becoming a very interesting lesson in how execution eventually reflects in both business numbers and stock-market valuations. Ather’s average monthly sales increased to around 29,000 units during the first five months of the current fiscal compared with 18,400 earlier. Ola Electric moved in the opposite direction, with average monthly volumes falling to roughly 13,800 units from 18,000. Ather’s operating revenue for the June quarter increased 89% year-on-year to ₹1,216.9 crore, while its market share improved to 16.8% from 14.2%. Ola’s electric two-wheeler market share, meanwhile, had fallen to around 7% in August from a peak of 50% in 2023. The difference is also visible in market valuations. Ather was valued at around ₹62,500 crore based on Wednesday’s stock price, more than three times Ola Electric’s valuation of below ₹17,500 crore. For me, the bigger takeaway is that being the early market leader does not guarantee that leadership will continue. Product quality, customer experience, distribution and consistent execution can completely change competitive positions over time. Learning Outcome: Market share should never be studied alone. Revenue growth, customer experience, execution and loss management together give a better picture of whether a company’s growth is sustainable.
