One banking number that caught my attention is the continued fall in loan-loss provisions. For me, this is important because lower provisions can directly support profitability, but only when they come from genuinely better asset quality rather than aggressive accounting.
For a sample of 29 banks, provisions against non-performing assets declined 27.3% year-on-year to ₹21,314 crore in the June quarter. This was the second consecutive quarter of double-digit year-on-year decline, supported by lower fresh slippages and improved asset quality.
Private-sector banks recorded a sharper 33.6% fall in NPA provisions to ₹10,597.5 crore. SBI also saw its NPA provisioning decline 31.9% year-on-year to ₹3,359 crore.
Another factor is that most banks now have provision coverage ratios of 75% or higher, reducing the amount of additional money they need to set aside against older stressed loans.
What I would track from here is fresh slippages and credit costs. Lower provisions are useful for earnings, but the real strength comes when they are supported by consistently healthy borrowers and disciplined underwriting.
Learning Outcome: Falling NPA provisions can improve bank profitability, but investors should check whether the decline is backed by lower slippages, strong provision coverage and sustainable asset quality.#StockInNews#WatchOutFor#EquityResearch#TrendingSectors#MacroViews
