Cholamandalam Investment: Growth On Track, But Is Debt a Red Flag?

Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Company Ltd. (Chola)

CHOLAFIN
, a key NBFC under the Murugappa Group, has delivered solid performance across metrics, but not without a few caution signals for investors. Let’s talk growth first. The company has reported consistent revenue and profit growth for the last 3–4 quarters, along with improving EPS both on a quarterly and yearly basis. Its TTM EPS growth is strong, and the stock is currently trading near its 52-week high. These are classic signs of business momentum. The numbers back this up: 3-year Revenue CAGR: 25.95% Net Profit CAGR: 31.01% Operating Profit CAGR: 27.79% In the March 2025 quarter, FII holding increased from 27.43% to 28.23%, showing rising foreign interest. Institutional investors also slightly raised their position overall. Technically, the stock is showing a Bullish Harami pattern on the daily chart – often considered a reversal signal. It’s also comfortably above its 200 DMA, suggesting long-term bullishness. But now, the concerns: The company is heavily debt-laden, and its debt has increased in recent quarters Cash flow from core operations has declined for two years straight, raising questions on sustainability While FIIs increased their holding, both Promoters and DIIs slightly reduced theirs The stock is currently below its 20 and 50 DMA, which may create short-term resistance Conclusion: Chola has been a consistent compounder with a proven track record, particularly in retail lending. But the rising debt and weakening cash flows warrant monitoring. Long-term investors can remain optimistic, but should track debt levels and cash flow trends closely. Short-term traders may want to wait for a clear bounce from near-term support.
