Federal Bank Q1 FY26: Core Growth Keeps Pace, But Provisions Bite

FEDERALBNK
posted a standalone net profit of ₹862 crore, down ~15% YoY in Q1, driven by elevated provisioning for agriculture and microfinance (MFI) slippages. Despite core resilience, the headline number missed expectations. Key Financial Snapshot Net Interest Income (NII) grew ~2% YoY to ₹2,337 crore; Total Income rose ~7.6% to ₹7,800 crore. Minority growth in core lending hurt by margin compression. Other income reached an all-time high of ₹1,113 crore, up ~22%, lifted by strong fee income (~20% YoY) and treasury gains. Operating profit rose to ₹1,556 crore (+3.7% YoY), before provisions. Growth and Asset Quality Advances grew ~9% YoY to ₹2.41 lakh crore; Deposits rose ~8% YoY to ₹2.87 lakh crore. CASA base climbed ~12% YoY to ₹87,236 crore; CASA ratio improved further. GNPA rose slightly to 1.91%, while Net NPA stood at 0.48%, with PCR at 74%. Fresh slippages (₹658 crore) came mainly from agri (₹270 cr) and MFI (₹273 cr). Margin & Provisions Pressure NIM compressed to 2.94%, the lowest in five quarters (from 3.16% in Q1FY25). Delayed deposit repricing continues to drag margins. Provisions surged ~177% YoY (~₹400 cr vs ₹144 cr). Slippages from agri and MFI remain key drag. What Management Says Fed Bank expects NIM to bottom in Q2 and recover as cost of funds ease and deposit repricing kicks in, targeting >3% in H2. Credit growth is expected to accelerate to ~12–13% this year, led by gold loans, commercial banking, and retail segments. Executives remain optimistic that MFI provisions have peaked, and fee income—particularly from cards and para-banking—will anchor earnings through soft cycle. Key Takeaway Federal Bank’s Q1 reflected core growth in deposits, advances, and fee income, but elevated slippages in agri and MFI sectors weighed on profitability. While the margin squeeze and provisions dented the bottom line, operating fundamentals remain intact. The outlook hinges on margin recovery in H2 and moderation in asset stress.
