Kotak Mahindra Bank: Strength in Core, But a Few Caution Signs Too

Kotak Mahindra Bank

KOTAKBANK
is showing several signs of strength — both in fundamentals and institutional confidence. The stock is trading near its 52-week high, supported by a series of strong quarterly results. Over the past year, TTM EPS has shown strong growth, with net profit rising by 20.2% CAGR and a consistent improvement in return on equity (ROE) over the past three years. Quarter-on-quarter (QoQ), the bank has been delivering growth in both revenue and profit margins, underlining robust core operations. Revenue has increased for four straight quarters, and its cash flow from operations remains strong, a critical health indicator in the banking space. Additionally, the book value and annual EPS have both been improving for two years straight, showing strength in balance sheet quality. Ownership data reinforces the bullish sentiment: FIIs raised their stake from 32.48% to 32.65% in the March 2025 quarter. DIIs increased from 28.79% to 29.14%. Institutional holding overall rose from 61.27% to 61.79%. Promoter holding stayed steady at 25.88% with zero promoter pledge, reflecting strong governance. However, the bank isn’t without red flags. On a YoY basis, net profit and profit margins have declined, and the operating profit margin has also dropped. The stock is currently trading below its 20 DMA, possibly reflecting short-term consolidation after the recent highs. Interestingly, the stock is trading at a PE lower than its 3-year, 5-year, and 10-year average PE, suggesting that even after a good run, valuations may still be attractive for long-term investors. Big Picture: Kotak is well-positioned among private banks with improving financials, rising institutional backing, and low debt. But the recent dip in YoY profit growth is worth watching — especially for those looking to enter at current levels.
