L&T: Strength in Fundamentals, Weakness in Recent Flow?
Larsen & Toubro (L&T)
LT
is one of India’s engineering giants—and its long-term fundamentals reflect just that. The company has been delivering consistent improvement in Return on Equity (ROE) and Return on Capital Employed (RoCE) over the past 3 years, indicating smart capital allocation and growing profitability.
It has also seen a steady rise in earnings per share (EPS) for the last two years, showing earnings strength. The best part? Zero promoter pledge, which signals high promoter confidence and clean corporate governance.
But not everything looks rosy in the short term.
In the recent quarter, L&T reported a decline in net profit along with shrinking profit margins. Operational cash flow—money generated from its core business—has also been falling for two years, which is a red flag for sustainability.
On the market side, FIIs trimmed their stake from 19.57% to 19.11%, even as Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) slightly increased theirs. Technically, the stock is trading below key moving averages (20, 50, and 200 DMA), showing bearishness, although a bullish RSI crossover and engulfing pattern hint at a possible short-term bounce.
Despite near-term hiccups, L&T’s long-term story remains solid with 3-year CAGR growth of 17.6% in revenue and 13.2% in operating profits. Net profit CAGR, however, stands at a modest 4%.
Lesson: A stock can be fundamentally strong but still face short-term headwinds. For long-term investors, L&T's improving capital efficiency and clean balance sheet offer comfort. But traders may want to wait for stronger price signals or improved cash flow trends before jumping in.
