Power Grid Q1: A Sluggish Quarter for the Power Giant

Power Grid Corporation

POWERGRID
posted a weak Q1 performance for FY25, reflecting pressure across key metrics. Revenue came in at ₹11,362 crore, down 5.3% QoQ. Net profit dropped to ₹3,526 crore, marking a 9.5% QoQ and 3.7% YoY decline. Operating profit also fell by 7.3% QoQ, with margins shrinking—indicating rising costs or weaker transmission volumes. Profit margins have been under stress both sequentially and annually. The declining Return on Equity (ROE) and Return on Capital Employed (RoCE) point toward inefficiencies in capital use and diminishing returns on shareholder funds. Despite this, the company maintains strong financial hygiene—zero promoter pledge and a steadily improving book value over the past 2 years. Its fundamentals remain stable, even though recent performance has been underwhelming. On the shareholding front, promoters hold a solid 51.34%, unchanged in the June quarter. FIIs slightly trimmed their stake from 26.78% to 26.51%, while DIIs marginally raised theirs to 18.56%. From a technical view, the stock is trading below its 20, 50, and 200-day moving averages, suggesting bearish sentiment in the short term. RSI and volume action remain muted, indicating a lack of strong buying interest for now. Looking at long-term performance, 3-year CAGR growth stands at: Revenue: 4.97% Net Profit: 8.97% Operating Profit: 4.24% Power Grid’s Q1 numbers may not electrify the markets, but its long-term business model in regulated transmission continues to offer stability. Investors may choose to watch for margin recovery or improvement in return ratios before turning optimistic again.
