Vodafone Idea tanks -7% after AGR case deferment – should you invest?
Vodafone Idea (Vi) shares dropped nearly 7% after the Supreme Court deferred the hearing on the company’s long-standing Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) dues case to October 6. The delay adds fresh uncertainty for the already stressed telecom player, which has been battling high debt, intense competition from Jio and Airtel, and the need for continuous capital infusion.
While the company has recently raised funds through FPO and is exploring further strategic tie-ups, its heavy debt burden (₹2 lakh+ crore including AGR dues) and cash flow constraints remain major concerns. On the positive side, the government’s support via stakeholding and tariff hikes across the industry could provide some cushion.
However, with profitability still elusive, significant capex requirements for 5G rollout, and uncertainty around AGR payments, Vodafone Idea continues to be a high-risk bet. Investors with a low-risk appetite may want to stay cautious until there is more clarity on the AGR verdict and funding roadmap.
Learning: In cases like Vodafone Idea, it’s crucial to weigh growth potential against debt pressure and regulatory overhang before making investment decisions.
