📣 US–Vietnam Trade Deal: Impact on Textiles 👗🇺🇸🇻🇳

1. New Tariff Terms Vietnam will now face a 20% tariff on textile and apparel exports to the US—higher than previous rates, though better than the earlier threat of 46%. Still, it's a major cost shift for exporters. 2. Margin Pressure for Vietnamese Exporters Vietnam exported around $46 billion in textiles to the US in 2024. With operating margins already thin (~5%), the higher tariffs are expected to seriously squeeze profitability. 3. Crackdown on Transshipped Goods A 40% tariff has been slapped on goods partially made in China and routed through Vietnam. This forces exporters to prove origin and boost local content—raising compliance costs. 4. Push Toward Vertical Integration To survive, many Vietnamese manufacturers are shifting to more local sourcing and self-contained supply chains. Local firms are targeting 35–40% regional content to meet US rules. 5. Opportunity for India & Bangladesh The upside? Countries like India and Bangladesh, with lower tariffs and simpler rules, could attract US orders that might shift away from Vietnam due to rising costs and compliance hurdles.
