$TORNTPOWER Torrent Power Ltd has secured a Letter of Award (LoA) from MP Power Management Company Ltd (MPPMCL) for a 1,600 MW coal-based thermal project in Madhya Pradesh. The greenfield plant, based on 2x800 MW ultra-supercritical technology, will be developed under the Design, Build, Finance, Own, and Operate (DBFOO) model at a tariff of ₹5.829 per kWh. The ₹22,000 crore project marks the single largest investment by the Torrent Group in the power sector. The plant is expected to be commissioned within 72 months of signing the power purchase agreement and will supply its entire capacity to MPPMCL. Coal for the facility will be arranged by MPPMCL under the Ministry of Coal’s SHAKTI policy. Torrent said the plant would use ultra-supercritical technology, which is more efficient and emits less carbon compared with conventional plants. The project is expected to generate 8,000–10,000 jobs during construction and around 1,500 jobs once operational. Vice Chairman and MD Jinal Mehta said the project would support India’s target of adding 80 GW of coal-based capacity by 2032 and help provide reliable base load capacity to stabilise the grid.
