ONGC - Strategically important but technically weak
ONGC
is showing a clearly weakened technical structure on the daily chart, with the stock trading around ₹232 and remaining below both the 20-day moving average at ₹238.4 and the 50-day moving average at ₹241.5. The negative positioning of price below both averages indicates that short-term momentum remains under pressure, while the recent decline from the ₹290–305 region has resulted in a sequence of lower highs and lower lows. A sustained move below the ₹230–225 support zone could increase selling pressure and expose the stock to ₹215–210, followed by the ₹200 region. On the upside, ₹238–242 is the immediate resistance zone, and only a sustained recovery above the 50-day moving average would begin to improve the setup. Fundamentally, ONGC's PSU character brings additional considerations, as government ownership and policy objectives can influence capital allocation, pricing decisions and shareholder returns. The company's earnings also remain sensitive to crude oil and natural gas prices, domestic production trends, government levies and changes in exploration or gas-pricing policies. Although ONGC remains strategically important to India's energy security and has a strong resource base, these factors can create volatility in profitability and valuations. With the technical trend currently weak and the stock below key moving averages, the overall bias remains bearish unless ₹242 is decisively reclaimed; a breakdown below ₹225 would further strengthen the downside case.
