Change of Character (CHOCH): The First Warning That Trend May Change
Change of Character (CHOCH) is one of the most useful concepts in Smart Money Concepts (SMC) and price-action trading. It helps traders identify a possible shift in market structure before a complete trend reversal becomes obvious. The basic idea is simple: when price stops behaving the way it has been behaving, pay attention. What Is CHOCH? In an uptrend, price generally creates: Higher High (HH) → Higher Low (HL) → Higher High → Higher Low As long as this structure remains intact, the trend is bullish. Suppose price creates a series of higher lows, but then suddenly breaks below the most recent significant Higher Low. This can be considered a bullish-to-bearish CHOCH. Similarly, in a downtrend: Lower Low (LL) → Lower High (LH) → Lower Low → Lower High If price suddenly breaks above the most recent significant Lower High, it can indicate a bearish-to-bullish CHOCH. CHOCH vs BOS This distinction is important. BOS (Break of Structure) generally confirms continuation of the existing trend. CHOCH is an early warning that the existing trend may be changing. For example: Uptrend: HH → HL → HH → break below HL = potential bearish CHOCH After CHOCH, traders usually wait for additional confirmation rather than immediately assuming a complete reversal. How Traders Use CHOCH A professional approach is to combine CHOCH with: • Higher-timeframe trend • Support and resistance • Liquidity sweeps • Volume • Fair Value Gaps (FVG) • Order Blocks • Retest of the broken structure For example, if price sweeps a previous high, rejects strongly, and then breaks the last important Higher Low, the bearish case becomes much stronger than simply seeing one candle break a level. The Biggest Mistake Not every minor swing break is a CHOCH. Market structure must be clearly defined. Traders often mark every small fluctuation as a structure break and end up taking multiple false signals. The better approach is to focus on meaningful swing highs and lows and wait for a decisive break.
