is trading at ₹500 and has a 10% circuit limit . During that trading session, its price generally cannot move above ₹550 or below ₹450. These levels act as automatic boundaries. There are two types: Upper Circuit: Price reaches the maximum permitted level because of strong buying. Lower Circuit: Price reaches the minimum permitted level because of strong selling. Circuit limits are intended to reduce panic, speculation and disorderly price movements. They provide market participants time to reassess information instead of allowing prices to move indefinitely in one direction. How Traders Should Read Circuits A circuit itself is not a buy or sell signal . If a stock hits an upper circuit, it simply tells you that buying demand has overwhelmed available supply within the permitted price range. Similarly, a lower circuit indicates strong selling pressure. For technical traders, the important question is what happens after the circuit is released or when normal trading resumes . Consider a stock that falls from ₹800 to ₹720 and then repeatedly approaches its lower circuit. This shows serious selling pressure. But blindly buying because the stock looks “cheap” can be dangerous. Instead, observe: • Volume expansion • Support and resistance zones • Gap-up/gap-down behaviour Circuit Filter vs Stop-Loss This distinction is extremely important. A stop-loss is a risk-management order placed by the trader. A circuit filter is a market-wide mechanism that restricts price movement. Therefore, if a stock suddenly hits a lower circuit, you may not always be able to exit immediately. There can be no buyers available at the circuit price.
