Market Structure: The First Language Every Advanced Trader Must Read

Before using RSI, MACD, Fibonacci, VWAP or any other indicator, an advanced trader should answer one question: What is the market structure?

RELIANCE
Price does not move randomly. It continuously creates swing highs and swing lows. These swings help us identify whether buyers or sellers currently have control. In an uptrend, the basic structure is: Higher High (HH) → Higher Low (HL) → Higher High → Higher Low The important point is that an uptrend does not require price to move upward continuously. Pullbacks are normal. What matters is whether the previous significant higher low remains protected. In a downtrend, the structure becomes: Lower Low (LL) → Lower High (LH) → Lower Low → Lower High Here, sellers remain in control as long as price continues to create lower highs and lower lows. What should you mark on the chart? Start from a higher timeframe such as the Daily or 1-Hour chart. Mark the significant swing highs and lows rather than every minor fluctuation. Then ask: Is price creating HH-HL? Is price creating LH-LL? Has the previous structural swing been violated? Was the violation supported by strong displacement? Is the move merely a liquidity sweep? The advanced interpretation A simple break of a previous high does not automatically mean a new bullish trend. Suppose price moves above a previous high, takes liquidity and immediately closes back below the level. This can be a liquidity sweep, not genuine structural continuation. Similarly, a temporary break below a previous low does not automatically confirm a bearish reversal. The quality of the break matters. Look for: Structure + Displacement + Closing Confirmation + Retest This combination provides much stronger information than simply watching whether price crossed a horizontal line. The biggest mistake advanced traders make is sometimes not lack of knowledge—it is over-marking the chart. If every small swing is treated as market structure, the chart becomes meaningless.
