Bank Nifty has remained under pressure over the last three months due to a combination of heavy foreign institutional investor (FII) selling, global economic uncertainty, rising crude oil prices, higher US bond yields and concerns about interest rates and banking-sector valuations. The biggest sector-specific factor is aggressive FII selling in financial stocks: foreign investors sold approximately ₹13,147 crore worth of Indian financial-services shares in September 2026 alone, accounting for more than one-third of their total equity outflows that month, with cumulative financial-sector selling reaching around ₹1.15 lakh crore during 2026.
Another major concern is the RBI's October 7 repo-rate increase of 25 basis points to 5.50%, alongside its shift towards calibrated monetary tightening, which has raised concerns about borrowing costs, loan demand and the impact of changing interest rates on banks' net interest margins.
Elevated crude oil prices and rupee weakness are adding to inflation concerns, while high US bond yields are making dollar-denominated investments more attractive and encouraging foreign investors to reduce exposure to Indian equities.
In addition, investors are closely monitoring deposit growth, competition for deposits, unsecured-loan stress, credit costs and the sustainability of credit growth, because any deterioration in these areas could affect future profitability. Technically, continued selling, failed rebounds and the formation of lower highs and lower lows can reinforce bearish sentiment and trigger further profit-booking. However, the decline does not necessarily mean that all banks are fundamentally weak; stable asset quality, healthy earnings growth and renewed institutional buying could support a recovery. Overall, Bank Nifty's weakness reflects the combination of foreign fund outflows, macroeconomic pressure, interest-rate uncertainty and bearish price action, rather than one single cause.#TechnicalViews#FundamentalViews
