UltraTech Cement Ltd. FLAGS DEMAND RISKS

ULTRACEMCO
UltraTech Cement, India’s largest cement manufacturer, has warned that below-normal monsoon rainfall and drought conditions in several parts of the country could weigh on demand from individual homebuilders. However, continued infrastructure spending, urban housing demand and private-sector investment are expected to provide support to the broader cement industry. The company’s warning highlights potential challenges for cement manufacturers, as construction activity remains closely linked to household incomes, particularly in smaller towns and rural areas. Individual home construction and renovation projects are often funded through agricultural earnings and personal savings, making demand vulnerable to weak farm output. While pointing to drought conditions in parts of Maharashtra, UltraTech cautioned against interpreting localised economic distress as evidence of a broader slowdown in cement consumption. India received 759.4 mm of rainfall during the June–September monsoon season, against the normal level of 868.6 mm, according to the India Meteorological Department. This represented a rainfall deficit of 12.6 percent and marked the lowest seasonal rainfall since 2015. Maharashtra, one of India’s major agricultural and cement-consuming states, declared drought in 265 tehsils after recording an 18 percent rainfall deficit. The weak monsoon has raised concerns about agricultural output and rural incomes. Lower farm earnings could prompt households to defer spending on new homes, home extensions and repair work, potentially affecting cement demand in rural and semi-urban markets.
