ULTRACEMCO
's Wires and Cables Expansion Plan
UltraTech Cement, the Aditya Birla Group company, has announced a Rs 1,800 crore ($210 million) capex plan to enter the wires and cables (W&C) segment over the next two years. This move is seen as another step by the conglomerate to offer comprehensive solutions in the construction sector, following its earlier entry into the paints industry with 'Birla Opus'.
CLSA's Analysis and Expectations
According to foreign brokerage CLSA,
ULTRACEMCO
's Rs 1,800 crore investment in the W&C segment has the potential to drive 4-5 times revenue, with a margin of 11-13%. CLSA believes that UltraTech Cement's focus on the retail (housing) market and a shorter time to market could lead it to focus more on wires than cables. The brokerage firm has maintained a 'Hold' rating on UltraTech Cement shares and suggested a target price of Rs 12,100.
Industry Outlook and Potential Challenges
CLSA noted that the cables and wires industry would need to grow at 11-13% annually over the next 4-5 years to absorb the announced expansion by incumbents and new players, including a planned Rs 10,000 crore investment by existing players. However, the brokerage firm warned that a weaker demand could weigh on the profitability of the sector over the medium term.
