Industries Limited share certificates he had been holding since 1987 and 1992. The certificates, which were for 20 and 10 shares respectively, have now potentially grown to 960 shares after multiple splits and bonuses over the years. Lengthy Digitization Process Deters Owner Despite the shares being valued at over Rs 12 lakh, Dhillon has decided not to proceed with digitizing them, citing the excessively time-consuming process. Obtaining the legal heir certificate alone can take 6 to 8 months, and the overall IEPFA process reportedly takes 2-3 years. Dhillon, who describes himself as a rally driver and auto enthusiast, feels the investment of time is not worthwhile. Potential Transfer to Investor Protection Fund If the shares have been dormant for more than seven years, there is a possibility they have been transferred to the Investor Education and Protection Fund (IEPF). Dhillon can confirm this by accessing the IEPF Authority's website and initiating the retrieval process, which involves submitting the necessary documents. IEPFA Guidance Helps Navigate the Process Dhillon acknowledged that while some misled him, the IEPFA was incredibly responsive in guiding him through the process of retrieving his 37-year-old shares. He expressed gratitude to the organization and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for their support. Dhillon also plans to donate 50% of the shares to a good cause.
