What is a dividend policy?

A dividend policy refers to the strategy a company uses to decide how much profit will be distributed to shareholders as dividends and how much will be retained for future growth. Companies generally choose between different types of policies such as stable, constant, or residual dividend policies. A stable dividend policy ensures regular and predictable payments regardless of earnings volatility. A constant payout ratio distributes a fixed percentage of profits, while the residual approach pays dividends only after all suitable investment opportunities are funded. The chosen policy reflects the company’s financial health, growth plans, and management outlook. Investors often look at dividend policies as signals of a company's stability and long-term profitability. A clear dividend policy can also affect stock price, shareholder satisfaction, and investor retention.
