What is high-frequency trading (HFT), and how does it differ from traditional trading strategies?

High-frequency trading (HFT) is a type of algorithmic trading that uses powerful computers and advanced algorithms to execute a large number of orders at extremely high speeds. HFT strategies capitalize on small price movements in fractions of a second, often leveraging arbitrage opportunities between markets. It relies on technology and market data to make split-second decisions, executing thousands of trades within milliseconds. Unlike traditional trading strategies, which often involve holding positions for longer periods (ranging from minutes to days or even weeks), HFT is focused on very short-term profits. Traditional traders analyze fundamental and technical factors to make decisions, while HFT strategies rely mainly on speed and algorithms to exploit market inefficiencies. The use of high-speed data feeds and direct market access in HFT provides a significant advantage over traditional trading methods, but it also introduces risks like market volatility and the potential for flash crashes.
