What is the difference between finance and accounting?

Finance and accounting are closely related but serve different purposes within an organization. Accounting focuses on recording, classifying, and reporting financial transactions. It ensures that a company’s financial information is accurate and in compliance with standards and regulations. The goal of accounting is to provide clear and organized financial data through statements and records. Finance, on the other hand, is concerned with the management of money and investments. It uses the data from accounting to make strategic decisions, plan budgets, assess risk, and maximize wealth or company value. Finance involves forward-looking activities such as forecasting, capital structuring, and funding decisions. While accounting looks at historical data, finance uses that information to project and plan for the future. Both are essential for sound financial health and operational success, but they function at different stages of the financial process.
