What is the Stock Market?

The stock market is a marketplace where buyers and sellers trade shares of publicly listed companies. It provides a platform for companies to raise capital by issuing stocks (equity securities) to investors in exchange for funds. Investors purchase shares with the hope that the value of these stocks will increase over time, allowing them to sell at a profit. The stock market operates through various exchanges, such as the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ, where stocks are bought and sold. Prices fluctuate based on supply and demand, company performance, and economic conditions. Stock market indices, like the S&P 500, track the performance of a group of stocks to provide an overview of the market’s health. Investing in the stock market can offer high returns, but it also carries risks, including the possibility of losing money. It's an essential component of modern economies, facilitating investment and economic growth.
