AU Small Finance Bank Gets RBI In-Principle Nod to Become a Universal Bank

AU Small Finance Bank has received in-principle approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to transition into a universal bank, marking a significant milestone in India’s banking sector. This is the first such approval since Bandhan Bank in 2014, and comes under RBI’s April 2024 guidelines allowing small finance banks (SFBs) to graduate to universal status. To qualify, AU SFB met key criteria including a minimum net worth of ₹1,000 crore, two consecutive years of profitability, and gross and net NPAs below 3% and 1%, respectively. The bank had formally applied on September 3, 2024. The in-principle nod is valid for 18 months, during which AU must fulfill all requirements, including capital compliance and regulatory due diligence. CEO Sanjay Agarwal hailed the move as a recognition of the bank’s responsible growth, resilience, and nationwide reach. The transition will allow AU greater operational flexibility, including diversification into a broader range of financial services. While SFBs have sought to drop “small” from their names, the RBI has instead opened the universal bank route. As noted by ICRA’s Karthik Srinivasan, the real challenge will be how effectively AU and future applicants can transform and compete with established private and public sector banks. This development signals a new phase in India’s financial inclusion and banking evolution, aligned with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
