Biocon Bets on Biosimilars and GLP-1 Portfolio for Next-Phase Growth

Biocon is accelerating its growth strategy by doubling down on biosimilars and expanding into the high-potential GLP-1 therapy segment, with CEO Siddharth Mittal highlighting that biosimilars now contribute 65% of revenues. The company has 10 biosimilar products commercialized globally, including recent approvals for Bevacizumab, Insulin Aspart (the first interchangeable rapid-acting biosimilar insulin in the US), Denosumab, and Ustekinumab, with launches underway in the US, Europe, and Canada. Beyond biosimilars, Biocon is making a strategic push into GLP-1 drugs—including Liraglutide, Semaglutide, and Tirzepatide—to capitalize on rising demand for diabetes and obesity treatments. It has launched Liraglutide in the UK, EU, and India, with filings for Semaglutide and Tirzepatide underway and expected launches by 2027. Notably, no generic Semaglutide is yet approved globally, giving Biocon a first-mover advantage. To support this ambition, Biocon has commissioned a state-of-the-art GLP-1 injectable facility in Bengaluru, capable of producing vials, prefilled syringes, and drug-device combinations, with commercialization expected in FY27. It has also expanded insulin manufacturing capacity in Malaysia and invested in end-to-end vertical integration—from drug substance to delivery systems. The company raised ₹4,500 crore via a QIP to strengthen its stake in Biocon Biologics and fund growth. In Q1 FY26, it reported revenue of ₹4,022 crore (biosimilars +18%, generics +6%, CRDMO +11%) and EBITDA up 19% to ₹829 crore, backed by key product approvals in the US, India, and Brazil. With strong R&D, global regulatory wins, and targeted capital expenditure now largely complete, Biocon is well-positioned to emerge as a leading global player in biosimilars and next-generation metabolic therapies.
