BSE Gains Market Share After Derivatives Expiry Swap with NSE

BSE Ltd has recorded a strong performance after swapping its weekly derivatives expiry day with NSE in September—moving from Tuesday to Thursday, while NSE’s Nifty contracts now expire on Tuesday. The strategic shift boosted BSE’s market share by 110 bps to 28.2% and lifted its premium average daily turnover (ADTO) by 19% to ₹208 billion in early September. Group-wide, derivatives turnover rose to ₹737 billion, up 14% from August, reflecting increased trading activity on BSE. However, the broader derivatives market faces regulatory headwinds, with SEBI expressing concerns over rising retail participation and speculative trading. The regulator has introduced measures to curb excessive speculation, adding uncertainty to exchange revenues. While BSE’s move has paid off in the short term, exchanges must now balance growth strategies with compliance amid tightening oversight, making agility and regulatory alignment key for sustained success.
